Subject: Wastebasket
We have been notified that we are over our allowed limit of space on the host server. I thought I would free up some room by deleting all the items in the wastebasket but they are identified only by UID (what ID is this?) and PID (page ID?) nubmers and I can't verify what I'm actually deleting. If it is in the wastebasket I'm sure it should be deleted but I would like to take a look at at least a couple of things first. I tried to restore one record and I never found it on the site although I did get the message "Successfully restored record tt_content."

1. UID and PID numbers be used to search for a record?
2. How do I find the record I supposedly restored?

Thanks for your help,
Ronnie Gorsuch

Whatever records you restore would be back in with the original container. A tt_news entry would be a news item, more than likely. However this should be displaying records that you chose to delete using the "Delete" function in the back end lists.

I'm not completely sure about restoring the record. I think the general idea is that you know what you want to find before you look. UID/PID by itself won't be very helpful.

Thanks for the response. I am really not that concerned with restoring the records but thought I would take this opportunity to really understand my options concerning the records in the wastebasket and the consequences of deleting them. If they are all there from using the "delete" function in the back end I'm sure I will harm nothing by deleting them all. I was a little concerned because to "unlink" a content element the icon is a trash can and I wanted to be sure that is something totally different. Perhaps I should not keep "unlinked" items either if I'm having space issues. Please comment.
Thanks again.

Ronnie,
Sounds like you and Pete are on the right track with understanding the Wastebasket, but it is worth pointing out that this probably won't affect your storage space much at all.

Most of the database records are just small bits of text that take up a tiny, tiny amount of space. Overall, the TYPO3 database can grow large due to some the things it does to speed up page loading time but its more likely that you're bumping up against storage limits due to large files.

Are you uploading MP3s, videos, or any other files that might use up a lot of space?

Thanks,
Jeff

Yes, we have uploaded some videos. I'm guessing we will have to start paying for more space if there isn't anything else we can do to conserve it.
Thanks again,

So the files in the wastebasket are just database records? What if we have deleted some MP3s? Are they in a wastebasket somewhere and taking up room?

Thanks again,
Ronnie

Ronnie,

If you delete files then they should be gone. They are not placed in the wastebasket.

My suggestion is to focus on files:

- video and audio tend to be large compared to text and database entries.

- Unresized photos taken with modern digital cameras can also be quite large especially if you have an album filled with them.

- Non-downloaded e-mail can result in huge disk usage.

- Your log files can also get big. TYPO3 creates them and in the WEC Starter Package they are stored in fileadmin/logs/stats.log. Also, there is a good chance Apache is creating logs too. Deleting the Apache logs often results in a huge space savings. Of course, you may lose some statistical data too if you delete these.

In Him,
Mark
