Move, Copy, Reference, De-Reference Content Elements

There are several ways to re-arrange your Content Elements. In this tutorial we will look at several different options.

Move a Content Element Within the Same Page

  1. To move a Content Element within the same page, simply click on the Content Element's banner and drag it to where you'd like it.

Copy a Content Element Onto a Different Page

  1. To copy a Content Element onto a different page, select the Content Element to be copied and click on the Copy Element icon.
  2. Paste Element icons will appear anywhere the Element is allowed to be pasted.
  3. Navigate to another page and click on a Paste Element icon to place the Content Element. Note that it will be an exact duplicate of the former Content Element.

Copy a Content Element Within the Same Page

  1. To copy a Content Element within the same page, click on the Copy Element icon and then click on any of the Paste Element icons on the page.
  2. Note that the title (header) of the Content Element is appended with (Copy 1). This is a reminder that you have duplicate content on the same page.

Move a Content Element from One Page to Another

  1. To move a Content Element from one page to another, click on the Cut Element icon.
  2. Navigate to the page where you want to place it and click on any of the Paste Element icons.
  3. The Content Element will be moved from its former page into the page you've selected.

Create a Reference Copy Content Element

  1. There may be times when you want a number of identical Content Elements on different pages. TYPO3 allows you to create multiple reference copies of the same Content Element and when you update one copy, all the rest will be updated as well.
  2. Select the Content Element that you want to reference and click on the Create Reference icon.
  3. Navigate to the page where you want a copy of the Content Element and click on one of the Paste Element icons.
  4. A blue banner will note that you have created a Reference to an element on page XX. This page number is the Page ID (PID) of the originating page. You can locate the original page by doing a TYPO3 search for the page number or by mousing over the page icons in the page tree.
  5. When you make any changes to one of the referenced Content Elements, the others will be immediately updated as well.

Removing a Reference from a Reference Copy

  1. If you want to make an update on a single instance of a Referenced Element, you will need to unlink it (de-reference it). To do so, click on the Create Local Copy icon.
  2. You will be prompted whether or not you want to make this change. By clicking Okay the reference will be removed and you can safely make changes to the local copy without affecting the others.
