Use the Text Editor: Import Word Text

You may want to copy a Word document into your Rich Text Editor at some time. Text created and saved as a Word document file contains many formatting tags that are not compatible with TYPO3 and the RTE. This How To will show you how to import Word text efficiently.

  1. Use the Page Module and select the Page from the page tree that you would like to edit.
  2. Either add or select a text Content Element where you would like to paste content.
  3. If the Content Element does not have a Header, it is a good habit to give it one now. Click on the Text tab to access the RTE.
  4. To delete existing text in the RTE, highlight the text. You can do this by clicking anywhere within the text and pressing Control-A to select all the text. Then press your Delete key.
  5. First, open a Word document, highlight the text you want to import, copy it to the clipboard, and then paste it into the RTE.
  6. Notice that the text is currently styled as a Word document. If you saved the document, many of the extraneous Word tags would remain and could cause problems in some browsers.
  7. To remove the Word formatting, click on the Remove Formatting icon.
  8. When the Remove Formatting window appears, ensure the MS Word Formatting check-box is selected and then click okay. All extraneous Word formatting will be removed.
  9. Next, click on the Save and view document icon to see the results.
  10. Notice that some of the formatting remains, such as the bold, the Italics, and the underlined text.
  11. There are times when you may wish to simply remove all Word formatting before importing the text. To do that, we'll copy the Word text, but this time we'll open MS Notepad and paste the text there. MS Notepad is a plain text processor, so it removes all formatting tags.
  12. Notice that all formatting has been removed from the text. This will allow you to return to the RTE and format the text as you see fit.
