Hi all: I am a New Jersey Circuit Rider helping a church get started and one of the people I am working with cannot login to the Typo3 backend using IE 8. Are there reported issues with this browser???? He is getting this error message:

"Login-error or session timed-out

No user logged in! Sorry, I can't proceed then!

(You must have cookies enabled!)

If your session has just timed-out, you may

With cookies enabled he is still not able to login to Typo3. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Patricia,

I use IE8 as my primary browser when working with the TYPO3 backend and it works fine. The symptom you note likely means that cookies are not being accepted by the browser. There are two possible reasons for this. In order of simplest to fix, check the browser privacy settings to make sure cookies are not always blocked (either for all sites or for the specific TYPO3 site). If that's not the case, and no one else is successfully using IE8 to access the backend, then it's also possible that the cookieDomain setting for TYPO3 is set to a value that causes IE8 not to accept the cookie because it is not from an authorized domain. I've fixed this problem on our site by configuring the cookieDomain property as our base domain name (minus the www prefix). This can be done using the install tool, or by editing the local configuration file directly.

Peace,

Patricia,

I should also note that the IE8 functionality in the backend appears to be broken for me unless I turn on Compatibility View (this is a button you should find next to the Address Bar in the IE8 browser). Without doing this, an error icon appears in the status bar of the web browser and the backend does not seem to function properly. I've had no problem using the backend with Compatibility View set.

Peace,

Mark: I've shared your posts with Jonathan and hopefully this will help. He tells me he's having problems with IE8, IE7 AND Chrome on a Windows computer. I hope we can get him working in Typo3 soon as his church has a brand new Vine Hosting account, domain name etc.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm a Mac user, so it's hard for me to advise Windows users about these things!

Hi Patricia

It is perhaps NOT IE8 or Chrome or other Browsers he is using! We had the same problem here with newer Versions of TYPO3 starting with Version 4.2.6 We had to disable the IP checking in the installtool and than this message disapeared. The problem is that some provides switch their IP to fast and to often - i.e. we had the problem with a load balancer in our office which is constantly doing his balancing. It actually should not affect TYPO3 but this is only theory as it does affect it.

For security reasons TYPo3 is checking all 4 IP numbers. At some customers we had only to enable the last two but i.e. somewhere else we had to disable it completely to access the backend.

Do the following.

YOU try to access his site from your browser. If he has a Laptop you can do a second step (or go to an internet cafe) and try accessing your site from here. If this is working than it is the problem I mentioned which has nothing to do with your browser at all.

If you need help write me a mail or give me a call!

God bless you
Andi

Hello Andi: I have read your post and logged into Typo3 in the backend for the Church that JB belongs to and for which I am doing training. If I select Install, I am getting a message that the Install Tool is locked:

"The Install Tool is locked.

Fix: Create a file typo3conf/ENABLE_INSTALL_TOOL
This file may simply be empty.

For security reasons, it is highly recommended to rename
or delete the file after the operation is finished."

If the file is older than 1 hour TYPO3 has automatically
deleted it, so it needs to be created again."

Question: Is it possible that when Vine Hosting installed Typo3 on the server for this church they forgot to remove the file? I can login to Typo3 in the backend using both Safari and Firefox and the Pastor of this church can login using Google Chrome on a Windows Laptop. Do you have any advice for us??? OTHER THAN CALLING VINE HOSTING... I'm meeting with JB and the church's Pastor tomorrow. Thanks. Webmaster Pat

I think we have now resolved this problem. If you try to login unsuccessfully too many times, the server thinks you are a hacker and locks out your IP address. Only Vine can fix this and they need the user's IP address to do it. Thanks everyone for your help.
