Whenever I add a new sermon, I can choose relations to existing resources and series, but none of them ever gets saved. Strangely, speakers relations work fine.
As I was not sure whether this might actually be a typo3 bug, I tried and confirmed in on typo3 4.3.0 through 4.4beta2.
Any thoughts/solutions on this?

We are having the same problem, although it seems to have happened without any reason. We did migrate our site to Typo3 4.4 and the latest starter package. All of the sermon and sermon resources were working correctly.
Now all of the MP3 resources have been dropped from all of the sermons. I can go into the sermon and recreate the relation to the MP3 resource, but it does not save.
We have well over 100 sermon resources, but I would not expect that to be a factor.

I finally found the problem. The mySQL database for our site had become corrupted. There were several tables (the sermon resource rel table being one) that had disappeared. To make things worse the mySQL repair tool would not fix the problem. I could not even drop the corrupted tables. In the end I had to backup and restore the entire database. But the SMS extension is working now.
