Add Spell Checking to TYPO3
TYPO3 does offer a spell check option but we recommend a better way the can check spelling in TYPO3 form fields as well as any other web forms. The solution uses the free Google Toolbar. The spell check in the toolbar supports several languages and different browsers.
Install the Google Toolbar
- Start by going to http://toolbar.google.com to download and install the Google Toolbar.Start by going to toolbar.google.com to download and install the Google Toolbar.
Click on "Download Google Toolbar." - Note: We do not usually capture pages from other websites without getting permission. Google holds the copyright to these pages. However, since we are promoting use of their tool, we made an exception this time.
- On the "File Download" popup, click the "Run" button.
- Click the "Run" button to run the installation.
- Check "Make Google my default search engine..." if you'd like.
- Check "Close all Internet Explorer windows..."
- Click on the "Agree & Continue" button.
- On the "Choose Your Configuration" window. Select the feature options you choose.
- Choose "Disable advanced features" if you are unsure.
Answer the "Script Errors" question. - Click the "Yes" button if you are unsure.
- After the browsers closes and you see a new browser window, it should contain the Google toolbar along the top.
Spell Checking in the TYPO3 Backend
- Log into the TYPO3 Backend and use the Page Module to select a page and a Content Element that you would like to edit content in.

- Click on the Google toolbar "ABC" icon to check the spelling.
- If you do not see the spell check icon, click on the Google Toolbar's Settings button and enable the SpellCheck feature.
- If nothing happens or you briefly see a message that says "No Spelling Errors Identified!" then the spell checker did not find any errors on the page.
- Click Stop and then add text to create a spelling error.
- Notice that all the text fields are checked. Those fields have changed color and the words that have potential spelling errors are highlighted in red and are links.
- Click on a highlighted word to see options for potential correctly spelled words. Select a correctly spelled word to replace the misspelled word.
- Click on a highlighted field and click on "Stop spell checking" to stop the spelling check and to continue editing.
