Upgrade TYPO3 4.1 to 4.2 - Step 2 - Update Extensions

TYPO3 version 4.2 is a major update that requires the latest version of extensions to be installed. Some extensions (mainly older or unsupported extensions) may not run on PHP version 5.2 and TYPO3 version 4.2. Update the extensions using the following steps:

  1. Click on the "Ext Manager" module in the left column.
  2. Choose "Check for TER2 updates" on the drop down menu.
Note: The extension that provides this option is part of the WEC Starter Package. If you did not start with the WEC Starter Package and do not see this option in the drop down menu then you may need to install the extension "TER Update Check" to continue; or you can update the extensions one by one using "Import Extensions."
  3. Make sure the check box next to "Display shy extensions:" is checked.
  4. Toward the bottom of the form, you will see three check boxes. Make sure they are set this way:
    - Display not loaded extensions too: unchecked
    - Display dev version updates: checked
    - Display the list of changed files: unchecked
  5. Below the check boxes, click on "Get version info from online repository". This gets a list of the latest available extensions. This may take a minute or so if the servers are busy.
  6. Click the "Show updated extensions" button to compare the installed extension versions with the latest available versions.
  7. If they are listed, upgrade wec_config to version 1.4.0, and upgrade wec_about to version 1.17.0. You will get errors when you upgrade to 4.2 if these two WEC extensions are installed and not upgraded to these newest versions. In addition, only upgrade newloginbox to version 3.1.0, not 3.1.1 or higher if it was previously installed. Also, if the Date2Calendar extension is installed, please click on the extension name to go to the extension configuration page and make sure "Natural Language Parser" is not checked. Repeat steps  8-14  below for  each extension.
  8. Review the "Upload-Comment" column that describes the updates that have been made since the version you have installed now. Pay special attention to instructions for upgrading such as the need to add a static template to pages using the extension. Do not upgrade any that say they require TYPO3 version 4.2 or higher until after the upgrade. Printing this page may be helpful so you can refer to it as you make any needed changes.
  9. Click on the name of each extension to begin the upgrade process.
  10. The version drop-down field shows the newest available version of the extension. Don't change this unless you know for sure that you need to install a previous version. The drop-down field to the right of "to:" should already be correct too and should start with the word "Local:" to store the new extension in the local extension directory. Click the "Import/Update" button to download the newest version of the extension.
  11. Next, you will often see a list of extension-specific changes that need to be made to support the upgrade. If so, click the "Update" button to make these changes.
  12. With the extension updated, make any needed changes suggested in the "Upload-Comment" column to ensure your website keeps working correctly.
  13. Test your website, especially any pages containing the extension, to verify that the extension works correctly.
Note: Make any needed changes so your website is fully functional prior to upgrading to TYPO3 4.2
  14. Click "Ext Manager" at the left again and select "Check for TER2 updates" again to list the remaining extensions that can be updated. Repeat the steps above for each extension that needs to be upgraded.
